Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids usually depend on the type of hemorrhoid.

External hemorrhoids

These are under the skin around your anus. Signs and symptoms might include:

  • Itching or irritation in your anal region

Internal hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum. You usually can’t see or feel them, and they rarely cause discomfort. But straining or irritation when passing stool can cause:

Thrombosed hemorrhoids

If blood pools in external hemorrhoid and forms a clot (thrombus), it can result in:

  • Severe pain

  • Swelling

  • Inflammation

  • A hard lump near your anus

Piles Consequences and Risks

  • Anemia: If timely piles treatment is not done, it can lead to anemia because the lack of healthy red blood cells will limit the oxygen supply to your cells.

  • Bowel Movements: If the condition of piles is not addressed it can lead to discomfort during bowel movements.

Fissures

The term fissure here refers to an anal fissure, which is a painful condition affecting the anus region of the body. An anal fissure refers to a cut or a thin tear in the tissue that lines the inner part of the anus. A fissure is similar to a crack and it can even cause muscle around the anus to get exposed. Anal fissures are very painful and they can affect people of all ages (from infants to the elderly). Surgery is the best fissure treatment and the procedure is simple.

Anal Fissure consequences and risks

  • Inability to Heal: An anal fissure that has not healed even after eight weeks will become chronic leading to multiple anal fissures and inevitably require fissure treatment

Diagnosis​

A doctor will conduct a diagnosis before suggesting an appropriate fissure treatment. The diagnosis of the fissure is first conducted by the doctor through an external visual examination of the anus. The doctor may also recommend certain diagnostic tests like anoscopy, colonoscopy, or sigmoidoscopy. All of these methods image the internal part of the anus or the intestines to determine the fissuring.

Fistula

An anal fistula is a small tunnel that connects an abscess, an infected cavity in the anus, to an opening on the skin around the anus.

The anus is the external opening through which feces are expelled from the body. Just inside the anus are a number of small glands that make mucus. Occasionally, these glands get clogged and can become infected, leading to an abscess. About half of these abscesses may develop into a fistula.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of an anal fistula include:

  • Frequent anal abscesses

  • Pain and swelling around the anus

  • Bloody or foul-smelling drainage (pus) from an opening around the anus. The pain may decrease after the fistula drains.

  • Irritation of the skin around the anus from drainage

  • Pain with bowel movements

  • Bleeding

  • Fever, chills, and a general feeling of fatigue

In the case of a more complex fistula, the surgeon may suggest

  • A fistulotomy, or

  • An advancement flap procedure (the fistula is covered with a flap, or piece of tissue, taken from the rectum, like a trap door), or

  • A lift procedure (the skin above the fistula is opened up, the sphincter muscles are spread, and the fistula is tied off).

Chances of recurrence of Fistula after laser surgery is very low almost 1-2%, which also depends upon the diet habits, lifestyle and the underlying diseases after laser surgery.
If a patient is diagnosed with stage 1 of Anal Fistula, his disease can be cured with fiber and nutrition rich diet and drinking a lot of water. Such a diet helps to flush away the fistula naturally. Additional antibiotics or ointments may also be provided to the patient. But, if the disease is diagnosed and to be treated in the later stages, the fistula can be cured permanently with the laser surgery.
Avoid spicy as well as hot food items, which increases pain and bleeding during defecation. Caffeine: Avoid caffeine when having a fistula because it can lead to dehydration. Some food items include caffeine are coffee, tea, chocolates etc. Alcohol: This can also cause dehydration leading to hard stools.
If your stomach is upset, try bland, low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt. – Drink plenty of fluids (unless your doctor tells you not to). – Include high-fiber foods, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains, in your diet each day.
You may need rest for a few days after your operation, but you should avoid sitting still for a long time. Also avoid doing too much walking.

After external hemorrhoids heal or the thrombosis/blood clot retreats back into the body, a skin tag may be left behind. There’s usually nothing much to be worried about recovering after laser surgery for piles. Keep your anal area dry and clean. Each time you pass a bowel movement, either take a shower or a sitz bath. You can also clean the area with wet tissues but avoid excessive wiping
It is common to have some light bleeding and clear or yellow fluids from your anus. This is most likely when you have a bowel movement. These symptoms may last for 1 to 2 months after surgery. After 1 to 2 weeks, you should be able to do most of your normal activities.
